Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women’s Services (S. 2793; H.R. 2478)
Bill SummaryThis bill will severely restrict the freedom of speech for organizations that help women choose to carry their child to term by providing counseling and practicial assistance such as diapes, maternity clothes, help with rent and bills, etc. This legislation will keep vital information out of the hands of women who are dealing with unplanned pregnancy. Specifically, this bill requires that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) establish rules for advertising as a crisis pregnancy center, pregnancy resource center, or pregnancy care center if it does not provide abortions or refer to abortion providers. Bill StatusThis bill was introduced in the House by Congressman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) in May of 2007 and was refferred to committee. Sen. Robert Menéndez (D-NJ) introduced this bill in the Senate in April 2008 and it was refferred to committee. |
