Reducing the Need for Abortion Act (H.R. 1074)
Bill SummarySimilar to the Prevention First Act, this deceptively titled bill would increase funding for Title X from $300 million to $700 million, a taxpayer-funded avenue for Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider. This bill would also expand the eligibility for family planning services under Medicaid. There are several provisions that in the bill that are presented as “pro-life” but in fact are phony and would do little to help save lives and some that are actually more harmful then doing nothing. The bill is sponsored by Cong. Tim Ryan (D-OH) who campaigns as a pro-lifer yet failed to cast a single pro-life vote in the 110th Congress. This bill is not supported by any pro-life organization. There are alternatives to this bill that accomplish the reduction of abortion without providing funding through Title X for Planned Parenthood. The Pregnant Woman Support Act, introdued by Cong. Lincoln Davis (D-TN) contains provisions to provide support to pregnant women so they are more likely to carry their pregnancy to term. Bill StatusCongressman Timothy Ryan (D-OH) introduced this bill in the House in February of 2007, and it was referred to committee. |
