Title X Family Planning Act (S.351; H.R.4133)
Bill SummaryThis bill would prohibit funds under the federal Title X family planning program from being distributed to facilities that provide abortions, except in cases to save the mother’s life. Nearly one quarter of all Title X funds go to Planned Parenthood clinics, the largest abortion provider in the country. Planned Parenthood received millions of dollars through this program last year and you can be sure they'll ask this Congress for an even greater funding increase this year. According to federal regulations, all Title X clinics must offer referrals for abortions and dispense all forms of contraception. These clinics are not required to notify parents of minors who seek abortions or contraception. This loophole allows sexual predators to access contraception and obtain abortions to cover up the abuse of their victims. This bill would cut off Title X sources of funding from abortion providers. Bill StatusSenator David Vitter (R-LA) introduced the bill in the Senate and it has been in Committee since January 2007. It is also in Committee in the House where it was introduced by Representative Mike Pence (R-IN) in November 2007. |
