Human-Animal Hybrids Prohibition Act (S.2358; H.R.5910)
Bill SummaryThis bill would prohibit the creation, transfer or transportation of a human-animal hybrid. Because of the shortage of human eggs for the cloning process, scientists have turned to alternative egg sources: animals, namely cows and mice. The creation of a hybrid is documented as legal in the U.K., but currently there are no laws in place to regulate them in the U.S. Hybrid technologies degrade human dignity. And they could potentially lead to a subclass of human beings used for parts and treated less-than-human. Bill StatusSenator Sam Brownback (R-KS) introduced this bill in the Senate and it was referred to Committee in November 2007. Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced it in the House and it was referred to Committee in April 2008. Bill HistoryThese are brand new technologies, thus this is a brand new bill… and a “brave new world”. |
