Economic Stimulus Bill Excludes Abortion Earmark

Economic Stimulus Bill Excludes Abortion Earmark

September 26, 2008

The motion to proceed to the Economic Stimulus bill, S.3604, was not passed early this afternoon.  This is good news for the pro-life movement.  Late in the negotiations, pro-abortion advocates in the Senate tried to include a “Nominal Price Exception” earmark for Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics.

Nominal Drug Pricing provides health clinics with abortifacients like RU-486 and Plan B at an extremely discounted price through Medicaid.  The clinics then charge whatever they want, often increasing the price to make a profit.  That money can then be used to fund other clinic practices, like abortion.

There are several ways that Congress forces taxpayers to fund abortion.  This shouldn't happen.  But the pro-abortion majority in Congress has been trying to sneak provisions into legislation much of this year.  They tried it with the War Supplemental and the Labor/HHS appropriations bills.  And within the past few days, they tried to slip it into the urgent economic stimulus package.  They’ll try to pad the pockets of Planned Parenthood whenever they have the chance.

As you can imagine, the Bail Out is extremely complicated.  That's why something that looks like it is supposed to be about the financial industry turns into a decoy for pro-abortion forces.  Thankfully, the Senate did not have enough votes to proceed with the bill as is.

But it’s not over.  Pro-aborts will most likely attempt to use similar tactics in the 111th Congress.  We’ll be watching and will be sure to keep you abreast of how you can help to stop it.
