Surge Comes Ahead of Two-Year Anniversary of Gosnell Conviction

Washington, D.C – Pro-life activists have made more than 8,900 calls to the House of Representatives in the past few weeks, urging a vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This afternoon the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced another wave of activist calls to 35 key Congressional district offices. The surge comes a week ahead of the two year anniversary of the conviction of late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell.

On May 13, 2013, Gosnell was found guilty of the murder of three newborn children and the negligent death of one patient.  He had been charged with eight counts of murder including seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors. Prosecutors said that he made millions of dollars over 30 years, performing as many late-term abortions as he could. His conviction spurred a vote on the federal five month abortion limit, first passed by the House in June 2013 by a vote of 228-196.

“Pro-life activists across the country have been making thousands of calls to Congress on behalf of the children and women being targeted by the late-term abortion industry,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List. “They are frustrated by the delay on this popular, modest legislation, but remain unified in support of a vote. It is time to remove the United States from the list of only seven countries to allow brutal abortion on demand after the point the baby can feel pain.

“This barbarism, brought into the national spotlight by the Gosnell trial in 2013, is a degradation to our nation. As the two year anniversary of Gosnell’s conviction approaches, we repeat our call to the House GOP to schedule an immediate vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.”

A November 2014 poll from Quinnipiac found that 60 percent of Americans, including 56 percent of Independents and 46 percent of Democrats, support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. To date, fourteen declared and potential GOP presidential candidates have signed on in support of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

The Susan B. Anthony List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
