Pro-Life Hero Sarah Palin Has Her Baby
May 08, 2008
Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Trig Paxton Van Palin. And with this act of becoming a mom to her fifth child, Palin reasserted herself as a champion for Life.
Trig was born with Down Syndrome, but that didn't stop her from seeing perfection in her little bundle of joy. She and her husband, Todd, have been very vocal about being pro-life.

Even Born Alive, Obama Votes Death
May 02, 2008
I learned greater gruesome detail this week of Barack Obama’s radically pro-abortion convictions. I had written in an earlier post (4/9/08) of Obama throwing out a bill that would have provided emergency medical care for babies surviving an abortion when he was the chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee of the Illinois State Senate. Well now let me tell you the whole story. Read the latest "That's an Outrage!"

Stealth Pro-Life Victory!
May 01, 2008
This afternoon, in a vote of 414-1, the House passed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). This same bill recently passed unanimously in the Senate. Seems like it's not too controversial, right? Well, this very complicated and intricate bill had some wonderful pro-life language in it.
On the whole, GINA was set up so that insurance companies and employers couldn't exclude coverage for patients based on genetic information. The fantastic pro-life part is that this included unborn children and children who are adopted. So if a mom is given a pre-natal diagnosis of some genetic disease, sydrome, illness, etc., that unborn child is protected under the law. No more pressuring to have an abortion of a less than perfect child.
And the law extends to embryos! Since genetic tests can be administered on embryos only a few cells old, these little ones need protection too. We actually have a bill that gives these little ones the same protection as older human beings.
Thanks must be given to Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI) who made sure that language was included in the bill. What a great pro-life victory!

Barbara Boxer up to her old tricks
April 19, 2008
Yesterday afternoon, the Senate passed a resolution welcoming Pope Benedict XVI to Washington, DC. Most resolutions tend to be a way to politely recognize or honor individuals or groups, but this one couldn't be without controversy.
Senator Barbara Boxer objected to a phrase in the resolution that said the pope cares for "each and every human life" claiming it reference abortion. Since Senator Boxer spends so much of her time advocating abortion on demand, I guess she just couldn't contain herself to drum up controversy over nothing -- especially if it meant another chance to blow her pro-abortion trumpet in the Halls of Congress.
Senator Sam Brownback agreed to remove the phrase to avoid further controversy over something that was supposed to be benign.

Update: Yale Story of Forced Abortion All a Hoax
April 18, 2008
Fortunately, the outrageous story of the Yale student who supposedly inseminated herself only to later take abortion drugs to induce miscarriages was all a hoax.
A spokeswoman from Yale told the Associated Press, "The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and foundtion of a woman's body."
When University officials investigated further, the student admitted she made the whole story up in as an experiment in performance art. While it is good to learn that this woman did not jeopardize her health with such an experiment, her attitude and callous disregard for human life remains appalling and her tactics questionable.

Shock and Awe at Yale
April 17, 2008
I must put a warning at the beginning of this report. This is a very disturbing story, certainly outrageous, but heart wrenching and evil. It is not for the faint of heart and even as I type, I feel sick and sad.
This is one of the most disturbing articles I have ever read. An art student at Yale University has done the unthinkable over and over again for her senior art project. This young woman needs prayers. Over the course of several months, she was artificially inseminated as many times as medically possible; then she took abortifacient drugs – medication to induce an abortion early in pregnancy. She video taped herself going through the miscarriages and saved the blood, fluid and tissue expelled from her body for her art project. She has used the remains as a medium for her art. Setting Obama's Record Straight
April 09, 2008
Last week, self-proclaimed pro-life Democrat Senator Bob Casey, Jr. of Pennsylvania endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president. Obama has been canvassing the state of Pennsylvania trying to drum up votes against Hillary Clinton, who is leading the polls there. The problem with this endorsement is that Obama has radical views on abortion and has voted on opposite sides of this issue than Casey almost every time a Life bill is up for a vote. The Associated Press reported Casey’s endorsement might help Obama with pro-life voters and Catholic voters, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were Obama. Read the latest "That's an Outrage!"

Thanks for Keeping Abortion Out of PEPFAR
April 02, 2008
Wednesday the House passed a delicately negotiated Global AIDS bill, nicknamed PEPFAR. With much effort from our pro-life leaders and grassroots activists like you, we were able to keep the pro-abortion forces at bay. There was much talk about the addition of a "family planning" amendment to this bill; a bill that is supposed to relieve some of the devastating effects of AIDS around the world not increase funding for abortions overseas. But thankfully, the bill wasn't hijacked. We are grateful for your efforts earlier this year telling your legislators to keep abortion out of this bill.
There may be more activity on this bill in the future. We'll be sure to keep you updated and ask for your help when we need it!

Women Are People Too
March 28, 2008
What Susan B. Anthony knew that Gloria Steinem doesn't.
By Marjorie Dannenfelser
For me, there’s something slightly embarrassing about Women’s History Month. It’s not because I don’t love and admire women. I spend much of my time interviewing and promoting them in politics; I am big on “Girls’ Night Out”; I like mothers, daughters and sisters (I am all of those things myself). But aren’t we taught from childhood to demur from opportunities for self-aggrandizement? When praised and applauded, aren’t we supposed to point to our partners and inspirations — those around us who serve the cause and share in our glory? We teach our children daily to fight the “it’s all about me” instinct. Why not our gender? Click here for Marjorie's complete commentary at National Review Online.

Caught Stealing - Being Given Our Money isn't Enough
March 18, 2008
It’s not enough that Planned Parenthood is given millions in hard-earned tax-payer dollars. The LA Times recently reported that Planned Parenthood of California is under investigation for over-billing the state government for birth control pills. When one of their internal auditors brought this to their attention, they fired him, ignored the report, and kept right on collecting that extra gravy. Read the latest "That's an Outrage!"

Recent Pro-Life Votes in the Senate
March 14, 2008
The Senate was busy yesterday getting in a bunch of votes before Congress takes its Easter recess. Thanks for those of you who took action and let your legislators know it’s important to defend LIFE! Here are the results:
The Unborn Child Rule Amendment in SCHIP was defeated by a vote of 46-52. This amendment would have covered unborn children under state health insurance programs from conception to birth, thus giving needy mothers in crisis pregnancies a greater incentive to choose life. See how your Senators voted here. As it stands now, pregnant women are covered, but their unborn children are not recognized. How strange is that!
Thanks in large part to your protests, the “family planning” and “reproductive health” provisions were retracted from the President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This bill should come to the Senate floor later this year.
Another amendment having to do with budgeting for the Child Custody Protection Act (CCPA) – which prevents the transport of minors across state lines in order to procure abortions and thwart their own states’ parental notification laws – was defeated by a very narrow margin. See how your Senators voted here. Although the defeat is disappointing, we’ll make lemonade of lemons. Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) was not present for this vote and CCPA has not yet passed in the Senate. So when it does come up for a vote, we’ll be sure to let you know and help us lobby McCain to be a voice for Life!

An Awful Celebration
March 10, 2008
Can you guess what today is? It’s the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. Can you believe such a day exists? The pro-abortion legions are keeping this quiet but read this parody by Jill Stanek of World Net Daily. Read more here.

Pro-Life Success with Senate Passage of Vitter Amendment
February 26, 2008
Success! Senator David Vitter's amendment to the Indian Health Care Improvement Act passed the Senate today by a vote of 52 - 42. We are now one step closer to permanently ensuring taxpayer dollars cannot be used for abortion in health service programs for Native Americans. To see how your Senators voted, you can view the official vote breakdown here.
Thank you to all the SBA List activists who contacted their Senators this month and asked them to stand up for women and the unborn. Your voice was heard.
A special round of thanks needs to go out to Senator David Vitter (R-LA), who faced stiff opposition to his amendment in the Senate. His stalwart dedication, combined with the strong grassroots voice of pro-lifers, influenced pro-abortion Senators to drop their anti-life alternative amendment late last night.
The Vitter Amendment now has to make it through the House before the President can sign it into law. Please watch for new action alerts and take every opportunity to defend life in the legislative process!

History Worth Making
By Marjorie Dannenfelser
February 17, 2008
As we approach President's Day during this tempestuous presidential primary season, appeals to historic role models are starting to fly. At just the right moment, the subject of personal greatness and fine character will trump race and gender talk.
It is a relief. You don't hear anybody saying, "You know I want to be like Lincoln because he was white," or "What I find most attractive and compelling about President Roosevelt was that he was a man -- and white!" No, this Presidents' Day, school bulletin boards and local television programming across the nation will focus upon the individual characters of individual human beings. Contrast this approach to our current Presidential nomination process where there is non-stop talk about "making history."

President Bush Defends Commitment to Protection of Unborn Children
February 08, 2008
Today President George W. Bush spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. He reiterated his strong commitment to protecting the most innocent of human life -- unborn children:
We believe that all human life is precious and deserves to be protected. (Applause.) In 2001, I had a grave decision to make on the question of embryonic stem cell research. I believed we could empower scientists and researchers to discover cures for terrible diseases -- without crossing a moral line. (Applause.) So I authorized research on existing stem cell lines, and stood against any effort to use federal tax dollars to support the destruction of human life. (Applause.)
Our critics had a different view. They thought my defense of life was short-sighted and harmful. When I vetoed two bills that sought to use tax dollars to destroy human embryos, some academics described my position as ridiculous and scientifically naïve. One publication predicted our plan would not hold up over the long haul.
Then last November, scientists announced a landmark achievement. They found a way to reprogram adult skin cells to act like embryonic stem cells. (Applause.) This discovery has the potential to end the divisive debate over stem cell research. It will allow us to expand the frontiers of medicine, while maintaining a culture of life. (Applause.) In the coming year, we will increase funds for this type of ethical research. And I will continue to push for a ban on the buying, selling, patenting or cloning of human life. (Applause.)
Contact Congress to Stop Latest Attempt by Abortion Groups to Gain Access to Your Money!
February 05, 2008
Congress is considering renewing funding for the President's Emergency Program for Aids Relief (PEPFAR). This program is essential for reducing the transmission and devastation of HIV/AIDs in the most affected countries around the world. Instead of renewing the program with respect to its intent, pro-abortion groups see an opportunity. They are pushing for legislators to integrate "family planning" and "reproductive health" programs with HIV/AIDs programs in PEPFAR.
Send a letter today that encourages your legislators to support amendments to expand the pro-life Mexico City Policy to PEPFAR and stop more funding to international abortion providers!

President Takes Stand for Life in Annual State of the Union Address
January 29, 2008
At his last State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush reiterated his commitment to protecting the most vulnerable human beings - unborn children. He referenced recent stem cell advances that do not require the destruction of human life and called upon Congress to ban "the buying, selling, patenting or cloning of human life."
The Susan B. Anthony List supports the President's vocal stand for Life, and strongly urges Congress to pass legislation to advance ethical research and preserve human life.
The President said,
On matters of science and life, we must trust in the innovative spirit of medical researchers and empower them to discover new treatments while respecting moral boundaries. In November, we witnessed a landmark achievement when scientists discovered a way to reprogram adult skin cells to act like embryonic stem cells. This breakthrough has the potential to move us beyond the divisive debates of the past by extending the frontiers of medicine without the destruction of human life. So we are expanding funding for this type of ethical medical research. And as we explore promising avenues of research, we must also ensure that all life is treated with the dignity it deserves. So I call on the Congress to pass legislation that bans unethical practices such as the buying, selling, patenting, or cloning of human life.

Roe v. Wade Anniversary Stokes Fears Over "Preserving Reproductive Liberty" on The Other Side
January 28, 2008
With the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on January 22nd, 2008, The National Organization for Women is faced with the reality that pro-life advocacy is spreading far and wide, and Roe is losing its security in the Supreme Court’s support.

35 Years Today
January 22, 2008
Today marks the 35th
The Susan B. Anthony List is proud to announce that Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has transferred the landmark work she did in the Minnesota legislature to the U.S. Congress. She recently introduced H.R. 4852, the Positive Alternatives Act, to expand the assistance available for mothers.
The bill permanently allows states to use federal money distributed through Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program for abortion alternative services. This includes information or counseling that promotes childbirth instead of abortion and assists pregnant women in making informed decisions about parenting or adoption.
Bachmann drove similar legislation at the state level in Minnesota that gained widespread bipartisan support. The Susan B. Anthony List strongly encouraged Bachmann to pursue this pro-active legislative effort in Congress and is excited to see her ideas come to fruition.
After a year of being on the defense against pro-abortion forces, it’s nice to have a positive, fresh approach to proactively educate mothers across the country about alternatives to the tragic “choice” of abortion. Thank you, Congresswoman Bachmann!
Today, the Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund, our connected Political Action Committee, announced an early round of congressional candidate endorsements for the 2008 election cycle:
