Stop the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2009

It is widely believed that the Democratic-controlled Congress will take up legislation that will make permanent President Obama's executive order allowing for the federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research. Two bills have been introduced this session by Rep. Diane DeGette (D-CO) and Mike Castle (R-RI), H.R. 872 and H.R. 873, the Stem Cell Research Improvement Act of 2009 and the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2009 respectively. It is not out of the realm of possibility that the Democrats will introduce a similar bill that will combine or add to these two bills. Both bills require research on so-called leftover embryos, which have already been created. President Bush vetoed similar legislation in 2006 and 2007.

I am writing to you today to ask you to oppose any legislation that would authorize federal funding of stem cell research that requires the destruction of human embryos. In particular, I ask you to oppose H.R. 872 and H.R. 873, the Stem Cell Research Improvement Act of 2009 and the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2009 respectively.

Both bills have been rendered unnecessary and overly controversial due to new developments in adult stem cell research.

As you probably know, cures are already here; they are not in the future.  Stem cells have been treating real patients.  In fact at least seventy three diseases have been treated by stem cells.  And not a single embryo has been destroyed to get us there.  Adult stem cells ARE the future of stem cell therapy, and even better, they are the present.

Embryo-destructive stem cell research has shown to be ineffective and even dangerous, forming uncontrollable tumors and creating host rejection problems.  Adult stem cells are non-controversial, ethical, and most of all effective at treating patients.

Back in November 2007, Japanese scientists discovered iPS cells which are not derived from embryos but display many of the same coveted characteristics as embryonic stem cells.  Why pursue controversial research which destroys human life when we have the same thing that does not destroy human life?

Additionally, in this tough economic climate it seems imprudent to fund research that does not have a track record of success while proven research that is both effective and ethical exists.
